Floating cages on the Senegal River at dawn

Senegal River Dagana Poissons du Désert

A farm today.A value chain tomorrow.

On the Senegal River, NAFA is building an integrated African catfish value chain (floating-cage farming, feed, hatchery and processing) to deliver healthy, nutritious, locally produced fish while creating jobs across the valley.

01 / Our project

Produce locally. Build to last.

NAFA is taking over and carrying forward the fish farming project, both industrial and community-based, launched in 2015 by West Africa Agro Projects (WAAP) on the Senegal River. Located in Kharé, in the commune of Bokhol (Dagana department), upstream of Richard Toll, the project will ultimately bring together a floating-cage farm, a hatchery, a fish feed mill and a processing plant.

We build on more than ten years of site studies, technical design and partnerships. Drawing on that groundwork, we have reshaped the project into a phased five-year program, designed to start fast and grow step by step.

At every phase, we produce locally what we used to import.

03 / Poissons du Désert

The Poissons du Désert range

Raised on the Senegal River, at the gateway to the Sahara, Poissons du Désert is the NAFA range: species selected for their hardiness, their nutritional value and their fit with the valley's climate.

SPECIES 01

African catfish

We have made Clarias gariepinus our specialty for its hardiness, its ease of farming and above all its nutritional richness, in a region where health services are fighting malnutrition.

SPECIES 02

Barramundi

Coming soon

A white-fleshed fish in high demand from restaurants and export markets, barramundi will be the next species in the range.

04 / Impact

Aquaculture that creates value where it operates

Our ambition is to train local fishing families in cage farming and, over time, enable them to run their own units on our shared infrastructure: fry, feed, processing and sales.

01

Local food supply

A steady supply of fish, close to markets, complementing natural resources under pressure.

02

Jobs and skills

Production, animal feed, maintenance, logistics, processing, quality control and sales.

03

Producer ecosystem

Over time, quality juveniles and suitable feed made available to partner producers across the region.

04

Local processing

Keeping value in the region through smoking, drying, preservation and distribution.

05 / Community development

One raft per family.

Each partner fishing family runs its own raft of 7 galvanized steel cages, anchored in the middle of the river. NAFA supplies the fingerlings, the feed and technical support, then buys back, processes and markets the harvest.

  1. 01

    Equip

One raft of 7 cages per family, installed and anchored by NAFA.

  2. 02

    Raise

The family feeds and monitors its fish, supported by our technicians.

  3. 03

    Add value

NAFA buys the harvest, processes it and sells it.
